CAMP 3 : HALL POINT , TAS
PENGUIN PARADE !
The Apple Isle is full of free and budget campsites – some of which are in remarkable places !
A penguin colony calls this site home . Can you believe it ? You can camp right beside penguins , the Bass Strait and a railway line !
What a brilliant site Hall Point , near the town of Penguin , is . This free and oceanfront site is a protected penguin colony , so no pets are allowed .
Hall Point is not a large area and it is close to the road and railway . Some sites back onto the vegetation rather than the beach .
Self-contained vehicles are required because there are no facilities – just a few picnic benches and views ! You can stay here for a maximum of 48 hours .
If you have a big rig , stay at the other end of the beach . There is a free camp there called Midway Point , and another donation camp called Preservation Bay , next to the surf club .
Penguin is west of Ulverstone and Devonport on the north-west coast of Tasmania . It is a gorgeous place to visit . There is a beachfront caravan park in Penguin , too .
Spend some time exploring the town . Travellers are sure to love the book exchange . A must for us was to not just dip our toe in the Bass Strait – but run right in ! It ' s a bit chillier than Queensland , but very refreshing !
