CAMP 4 : ROCKY CREEK GLACIAL AREA , NSW
ROCK STAR !
Its facilities might be basic but we ' ve included this site for a couple of reasons : it has natural spas , and it is one of the closest camps to a cathedral of rocks in the bush !
Rocky Creek Glacial Area is a freecamp south-west of beautiful Bingara , literally metres off the road to Narrabri , NSW .
Even though this site is called ‘ glacial ', there are no glaciers or ice . It is just a geological wonder in which you can cool off .
As well as being free , this site is pet-friendly , there are toilets , fire pits , mobile coverage and shade . It is a small camping area , not all level , and not really suitable for big rigs .
Just 28km down the Killarney Gap Road , in the Narrabri Shire , is Sawn Rocks , in Mt Kaputar National Park . These very unusual rock formations look like a wall of pipes . Known as ‘ organ piping ’, they are perfectly aligned . The pentagonal basalt crystals resulted from slow , even cooling of the molten rock . They are 40m of vertical evidence of a volcanic past .
Sawn Rocks has a 750m walking track and a platform , a picnic area with shelters , barbecues and a toilet .
