CAMP 5 : EROMANGA HALL , QLD
JURASSIC PARK !
Dinosaurs , a pub down the road , a welcome hot shower and beautiful sunsets … Welcome to Eromanga , Qld .
Eromanga ' s town claim is threefold : it ’ s the furthest town from the sea , it ’ s home to the only independently owned oil refinery in the country , and it has Australia ’ s largest dinosaur ! It is also on Queensland ' s Natural Sciences Loop .
We also highly rate the wonderful free overnight camp – it is complete with excellent showers , toilets and a playground .
Driving in from Noccundra , which involves plenty of water crossings , Eromanga was muddy . We were the first at the freedom camp , Eromanga Hall , so we had the pick of spots . It is not a large parking area and it is for 24 hours only . A dump point is on the parking area side , while toilets and showers are nearby .
Conveniently , Opalopolis Park has a playground , barbecue and a picnic table – great for families and pet owners . Make sure you check out the sign and the huge map . There is a boulder opal monument commemorating opal miners " past , present and future ".
Walk a few steps further to the Living History Centre . It has free entry : just collect a key from the Royal Hotel and Eromanga Café . Take a self-guided tour into the life of a 1900s Country Women ’ s Association ( CWA ) member and learn more about the locals and region . There is also an introduction to the Eromanga Dinosaur Project .
Signs out the front are part of the town historical walk , where you can learn about what buildings were there in the past . Next is the Royal Hotel , overlooking the " face in the hole " dinosaur . He is so tall that you have to climb steps for a photo !
