Sometimes things just go wrong . Mechanical failures , finding yourself lost or bogged , or even medical emergencies – these things can and probably will happen at least once .

The important thing : plan for when things don ’ t go to plan . GoRV ’ s roving correspondent , Marty Ledwich , who is full-time on the road with his wife , has decades of experience as a volunteer in Victoria ’ s State Emergency Service . This month , he is sharing that experience with you .

Once upon a time , I found myself stuck on a beach in New South Wales with my 80 Series . I was much younger and , like an idiot , I had driven onto that beach without means of recovery . Not even a single traction board . No one was around for miles . I didn ’ t feel unsafe but I was unnerved . Come sundown , after some hours of twiddling my thumbs , a 4WDer who thankfully was more prepared than I was , came along .

Chastened , I gratefully accepted his help . A snatch out and I was on my way . But I ’ ve never forgotten that experience . Oh , there was another time when the hitch pin rattled loose ( never to be seen again ) and the van nose-dived into the dirt on the Brachina Trail in the Flinders Ranges … but that ’ s another story .
