TRAVELS WITH KINGDEANO ADVENTURES

When we ’ re out and about on foot , we take a backpack for Twyla . In it , we pack a water bottle , collapsible drinking bowl , doggie poop bags , baby wipes , and a bag of dog treats ( with something long-lasting to keep Twyla entertained while we sit for lunch ). We sometimes also pack a small dog blanket just in case the ground is too hot or cold . We pack a long lead and tennis ball in case we come across a park , so she can have a run and play fetch . We now also pack a comb to brush Twyla ’ s hair – we learned the hard way after Twyla came out of a bush with thistles from the tail to ears .
When it comes to our campervan , we also have a few items : a hairbrush , an outdoor raised dog bed , and a round dog basket . We have a couple of towels on hand to dry her off in case it rains . To give Twyla some freedom when we ’ ve ‘ set-up camp ’, she has a tether that we screw into the ground with a long lead attached .
We ’ ve found that holiday parks are becoming more pet-friendly over time – which is great ! When searching for pet-friendly freecamping spots , we usually use the WikiCamps mobile app . And once we ’ re set-up on-site , we normally introduce Twyla to our neighbours ’ dogs ( within reason ) so she settles and doesn ’ t bark at them .
When it comes to Twyla ’ s safety , we keep a few things in mind . First , as we travel to various Australian locations , we ’ ve always made sure that Twyla ’ s ‘ tick-prevention ’ is up to date . We always check the area for foreign objects that she may want to eat ( such as cooked animal bones that could splinter ). Twyla is known to be a bit of a ‘ vacuum ’ and eat anything ! We also check if other campers have their own dog off-leash .
When out walking in the bush , one of us usually walks ahead of Twyla to keep a lookout for snakes . We ’ d also recommend having a dog first-aid kit on hand .
When a place isn ’ t pet-friendly , we usually take turns going into the building . But we must admit , on the odd occasion , Twyla ’ s cute looks have got us in as a family .
Travelling with a dog does have its challenges – but we wouldn ’ t travel any other way !
