THE WALLABY TRACK WITH LIONEL MUSSELL

FELLOWSHIP UP NORTH

LIONEL IS IN WALKAMIN , QLD , FOR THE SOUTHERN WINTER , CATCHING UP WITH HIS AUSTRALIAN CARAVAN CLUB RAINFOREST RAMBLERS FRIENDS …

It was a very pleasant surprise when my ACC Rainforest Ramblers friends John and Helena rang to say they would come up from the coast to take me for a great outing soon after I ’ d arrived at Walkamin Caravan Park , Qld .
We started off with a lovely lunch at a nearby hotel on our way to Lake Tinaroo , which was in full flow .
After that we continued along the unsealed track that eventually joined up with the Gilles Highway . On our bumpy way there we called in at most of the campgrounds on the shores of the lake .
Granite Gorge is only about 20km from Walkamin but it is a world away in what is there for energetic walkers . I was not one ! There are plenty of tracks and lots of birdlife .
As the ACC Rainforest Ramblers were mustering there I packed up Yemmy 2 and joined them for a few days .
There was just one couple there on the first day and as they had left a few things at home in Mareeba , they invited me to go with them and see their lovely home in the ‘ Village ’. It was an eye-opener and I was impressed .
On the Saturday , the Ramblers headed out from the gorge and we went to a great car and motorbike display at Atherton . Our next stop was at the refurbished dining room at the Tolga Hotel for lunch before returning to the gorge .
Sitting around a lovely fire and chatting after dinner was great . Next day , they inflated their kayaks and paddled along the creek . More people had arrived by the weekend and we had a lovely fire to sit around and yarn on Saturday night .
