LETTERS FROM THE ROAD

HOT BRAKE ISSUE
Re Ian Turnbull ' s letter ‘ Jack of All Trades ( GoRV # 76 ), I too have a recurring hot brake . In my case , it is on the nearside front . It has been back to the service agent three times now and lasts one or two days of travel and then becomes hot and ‘ grabby ’ again .
It is going in to have the front and back swapped to see if the fault goes with the axle or the brake . I spoke with a fellow traveller near Kevington , Vic , and he had the same problem . Having taken the same actions on the road as Ian Turnbull ( to back the brake off ), what I would emphasise is this must only be a short-term fix as the braking will be uneven if not correctly adjusted as the magnet has to travel further .
I have checked the backing plate and that leading and trailing shoes are correct , as well as springs , handbrake cable , etc . Is this a widespread problem ? As for the jack , invest in a Kojack . It costs about $ 300 but it is excellent .

CAMPFIRES : IT ’ S EVEN WORSE !
Re the article Fired Up About Safety ( GoRV # 76 ), having been involved with running trail bike rides over three days , dousing the campfires built directly on the ground required a lot of water and time .
We learned our lesson early on when I had stayed overnight after everyone had left camp , and I woke up to find the grassy camping area on a slow burn and no phone reception to call the firies for some miles up the road .
From then on we stayed with a water pump and tank , which we sometimes had to refill . And even though the campers may have put a couple of buckets of water over the fire , we still often had water boiling and steaming some hours later . The heat would penetrate well down into the earth .
