RV FEATURE
There are many things you can try to get around this problem but the root cause is out of your control . The mobile data networks are seriously congested and there is nothing you can do about it . Until now .
Starlink by Space X has been available in Australia for about two years and it represents a quantum leap in internet availability and performance , the likes of which Australia has never seen .
WHAT IS STARLINK ?
Put simply , Starlink is a satellitebased internet service . It was set up by Elon Musk and his Space X company . It consists of more than 5000 tiny satellites ( at last count ) circling the globe in low earth orbit . The company plans to have 12,000 satellites in total and there ’ s the possibility it will be extended to 42,000 ! There are also ground stations positioned in strategic locations , including Australia , that help boost the performance of satellites in range .
To access Starlink , you need to purchase a kit . It consists of a small antenna ( often referred to as a dish ), a stand for the antenna and a wi-fi router .
HOW DOES IT WORK ?
The Starlink satellites are in constant motion and there may only be a handful above your position at any one time . The dish itself has lots of little antennas ( called a phased array ) that can lock onto multiple satellites at once . As one satellite moves out of range , the system will pick up and lock onto another one as it comes into view .
IS IT EASY TO SET-UP ?
If you ’ ve ever experienced the ‘ joys ’ of setting up a portable VAST satellite TV dish , you will be pleasantly surprised at how easy Starlink is to set-up .
Essentially , you fit the antenna into the stand , place the antenna in a position where it has a clear view of the southern sky , connect the antenna to the router using the supplied cable , and plug the router into 240V power . Within minutes , the antenna will use its internal motors to point to the optimum position for signal reception . You don ’ t have to interact with it at all .
