SHOULD I GET STARLINK ?
If you ’ re residential and you live in any of the major cities or towns , I would stick with regular NBN . It ’ s cheaper , you have more speed options and the support is local .
If you live outside of the fibre NBN network and you have to rely on a 5G broadband connection , Starlink is undoubtedly worth a look .
For mobile users , the final decision will depend on your style of travel and how important internet connectivity is to you and your family .
If your annual holidays are for just a couple of weeks a year , you may want to get away from the internet , experience the outdoors and let your kids rely on the mobile broadband network .
If you take longer holidays and travel to remote areas with little to no communication options , Starlink ’ s low up-front costs and flexibility to suspend your service for as long as you want will be ideal .
You can change your service plans , update your home address and see download statistics on the Starlink website
For full-timers like myself , Starlink is a game-changer and I don ’ t use that phrase lightly . Our internet connectivity woes have been almost completely eliminated . We can stream , we can surf the net , we can stay connected on social media and we can work literally from anywhere in the country with the sort of performance we only ever dreamed about .
Do I like the fact that I ’ m paying the richest man in the world for my internet services rather than an Australian company ? No . I ’ d much rather support Australian jobs . But the fact of the matter is that we , the travelling public , have been let down by the Australian telcos when it comes to mobile internet . The 4G and 5G networks are congested , over-priced and offer limited availability .
No matter what you think of the man , Elon Musk and his Space X company have done what no other telco , or government for that matter , has managed to achieve : reliable , high-speed internet anytime , anywhere for a reasonable price . For that , I applaud him .
Starlink is the single greatest innovation for travellers ever . And it ’ s only going to get better . Safe travels .
