WATER
WORRY
I’m beginning to seriously
question my family’s water
usage when we’re out and
about with our van.
We mostly free camp in towns
that operate almost entirely on
collected rain water. My van is
equipped with two 60L fresh
water tanks and though 120L
sounds like a lot, on one recent
trip my family of five – two
adults and three kids – ripped
through it like it was ice cream
on a hot day. In just under three
days, it was gone, and I’m still
trying to work out where. After
all, the water was only used for
washing dishes and one quick
hose-down of the kids after a day
at the beach using the external
shower. So either I need to switch
to disposable plates or I need to
upgrade my water tanks.
I also pack jerry cans of fresh
water as a back-up supply but
20 or 40L is a drop in the ocean
when you want to stay on site
for a week or more.
I only use about 250 of my
van’s 475kg payload capacity,

so there’s plenty of scope
to increase my fresh water
storage. But until I can afford
the upgrade, I think I’m stuck
lugging jerry cans of bore
water to my van in order to
wash dishes after the first
three days. If you've done
the bore water dash before,
you'll understand why it's
so frustrating!
