LETTERS FROM THE ROAD

DREAM ON
Just a quick note to say that I think GoRV is getting better and better . I own an old Jayco Sterling and have been travelling the country for years . This van has never let me down . Nonetheless , even though I have no plans to upgrade , I do love looking at the new vans in GoRV each month – there ’ s nothing quite like sitting back dreaming of ‘ one day ’…

When reversing a caravan or trailer , etc ., you can use a couple of methods . Remember : you turn your vehicle ’ s steering wheel in the opposite direction to what you would for reversing your car / tow vehicle when unhitched .
There are two thoughts on how to steer your tow vehicle when reversing a caravan / trailer :
1 . The old method of left-hand down and right-hand down , using your towing mirrors to see where you are going ;
2 . This ‘ new ’ concept works well : If you place your hands on the centre grip at the bottom of the steering wheel and you want the rear of your caravan / trailer to go left , you simply move your hands to the left , using your towing mirrors to see where you are going .
If you want to make the rear of your caravan or trailer to go to the right , then simply move your hands to the right . Robert Simpson
Thanks for your letter , Robert . Yes , that ’ s excellent advice . In fact , an old vanner told me your tip about holding the wheel at the bottom decades ago . It was a gamechanger – this was the advice that really ‘ taught ’ me to reverse a caravan . – Ed
