Australia is a beautiful , mesmerising continent . It captivates our senses and demands our exploration from that first encounter with one remarkable location .
For me , it was the first time I went on a 4WD adventure to the top of Mt Stirling , Vic , and saw Greig ’ s Hut , the set for the movie ‘ The Man from Snowy River ’. After grinding our way up some ridiculously rutted goat tracks to finally see that iconic image of a log hut overlooking the majestic Snowy Mountains bathed in the summer sun , it felt like we were on top of the world . From that day I was hooked on offroad adventures .
I also remember the look on my wife ’ s face the first time she saw Uluru . It was our first outback adventure together and her first trip to the Red Centre . She had seen plenty of photos of ‘ the rock ’ but never imagined just how big it could be . From 5km away , as you drive towards it , it fills the view out of the car ’ s windscreen .
“ That ’ s a stonking bit of rock ,” she explained . We ’ ve been travelling around Australia together ever since .
A Japanese doomsday cult was found to have plans to build a nuclear bomb . Did they succeed ? ( pic : National Museum of Australia .)
But Australia is also a very weird part of the world . For instance , did you know that Australia is the only country to have lost a prime minister ? Those of you born before 1990 would know the tale . For younger readers , Harold Hold was Australia ’ s 17th prime minister . He went missing while swimming at Cheviot Beach near Point Nepean , Vic . His body was never recovered . If this happened to any world leader , it would have sparked a crisis but , here in Australia , apart from conjuring up some wild conspiracy theories , it was just one of those things .
Here are some other weird facts about Australia …
