You see , there is another possible meteor impact site in Australia that , if proven , would dwarf the Deniliquin Structure . Called the Precambrian / Cambrian Impact Structure ( or MAPCIS ) and centred about midway between Uluru and Mt Connor in the Northern Territory , the inner ring of the structure is estimated to have a diameter of about 600km . There is also thought to be an outer ring with a diameter of a mindboggling 2000km ! If you think about it , you could be driving inside this crater anywhere within the central regions of the country .
THE NINTH STATE / TERRITORY
The Australian continent is made up of six states and two territories , right ? Well … no .
We all know the states : Queensland , New South Wales , Victoria , South Australia , Tasmania and Western Australia . And we know about the Northern Territory and the Australian Capital Territory . The one you probably don ’ t know about is the Jervis Bay Territory .
Now , I can hear readers screaming at me claiming that Jervis Bay is a coastal town in New South Wales known for its immaculate beaches adorned with the whitest sands and deep blue waters . While that is technically correct , Jervis Bay is also an official territory of Australia .
One of the many artefacts at RAAF Woomera .
You see , when the federal government decided that Canberra would be the capital city of the country , it created the ACT so that it would not be located in the state of New South Wales , as that would have upset the Victorians . As if that wasn ’ t bizarre enough , at the same time , the government created the Jervis Bay Territory so that residents of the completely landlocked ACT had access to the sea . I kid you not !
Originally , Jervis Bay was governed by the same laws as the ACT but in 1989 , when the ACT was granted self-government , the Jervis Bay Territory became the responsibility of several federal government departments and is now an Australian territory in its own right .
