FREEDOM CAMP OF THE MONTH
After four months on the road , this riverside camp made our top 10 freedom camps list . Watts Bend , Vic , is free , pet-friendly and positioned right on the water .
Watts Bend has no facilities , but who needs that when you have a sandy beach , no other campers in sight and views across the Murray River into New South Wales ? There is even a rope swing . Perfect for a summer cool down .
The site is fairly level , and it is a high bank down to the beach . It was quite dry where we were camped up , but the tracks were still drying out in places when we visited .
The Murray River has two long lines of free camps on either side of the river . As part of our winter adventure , across five states and the Northern Territory , and 16,000km , we were looking forward to sampling many sites along the mighty Murray . However , the winter weather put paid to that , with many sites still inaccessible due to flooding .
We were lucky that Watts Bend was still accessible . The steeper banks meant we were safe for the night . Waiting for more favourable conditions , we prolonged our time in Mildura , Vic , and discovered a foodie haven : wineries , local produce , eateries and a distillery . I loved the Holden museum and even the information centre was brilliant .
