TRAVELS WITH KINGDEANO ADVENTURES
When we purchased our campervan , we only camped at caravan parks , as we were uncertain about free-camping . We had never experienced drop toilets , or being in a secluded spot . But there was a time when we finally gave it ago , and we haven ’ t looked back since .
There are many options for freecamping spots , near and far . Some are pet-friendly , some with drop toilets ( or flushable , if you ’ re lucky ), some are in the middle of a town ( or behind a pub ) and some are so remote that they provide you with the best outlook to the stars above .
You can find a great free-camping spot with little effort . We tend to use the WikiCamps app , as it provides up-to-date information on campsites and provides fellow camper reviews . We also favour speaking to people in person . Other options are to check out Google or to read up on a camping magazine , to name a few .
Whenever we set out to a free campsite , we generally have a backup plan , which may be another free campsite , or a paid one . We recommend turning up to your site in daylight to easily survey the area for suitability . We had once arrived during the night and were greeted by a group of teenagers with their DJ equipment . Not wanting to be party poopers , we headed off to the next free camp .
Free-camping is a smart way to make getaways more affordable . We like to spend the money we save on sites in a town nearby . If you ’ re an avid viewer of our YouTube channel , you ’ ll know that we enjoy visiting a town bakery or store .
If you ’ re hesitant to try freecamping , we suggest first going away with a group of friends . We did just that , and now our friends have hit the road , doing the big lap of Australia . The ‘ test run ’ put their minds at ease .
