Is there good reason for that or did we all get caught up in the headlines ? I went up to see for myself . What I found was a remarkable recovery . They ’ re a tough , resilient lot up in Far North Queensland .
When things break , they fix them – quickly . If they come across a hurdle – even a cyclone – they just get on with it and deal with the outcome .
Here ’ s a breakdown on the state of Tropical North Queensland – where you can go , what you can do and where to stay , as well as a few places that are temporarily out of action .

ROAD TO PARADISE
The Captain Cook Highway from Cairns to Port Douglas is open ! Landslides blocked the highway ’ s Great Barrier Reef Drive . But in just weeks , the sludge , debris and massive rocks have been cleared and the 45-minute scenic link between the two towns restored .
There are a few ‘ one-lane ’ sections remaining where structural work needs to be completed on the road but the hold-ups are short . The normal 45-minute drive from Cairns to Port Douglas takes about an hour .
In the meantime , though , the roadblock didn ’ t stop much . Reef cruise operators came up with a brilliant idea of boat shuttle runs up the coast . And an alternative route – the ‘ back way ’ – up through Kuranda Ranges , Mareeba and Mt Molloy , was utilised .
