Cairns was largely untouched by Cyclone Jasper . Subsequent rains caused flooding at the airport and in low-lying beaches along the coast heading north , like Machans and Holloways . But flights resumed quickly and , for tourists , the way is clear .

Crystal Cascades : This favourite swimming spot for locals was flushed with extra water and a ‘ bonus ’ crocodile during the postcyclone rains so it had to be closed . But the croc is gone and so are swimming bans .
Cairns Lagoon : Located on The Esplanade in the heart of town , it ’ s free of crocs and stingers , has lifeguards and wheelchair access .
Skyrail : Take the cableway over the rainforest treetops and Barron Gorge to Kuranda village for a bird ’ s-eye view of Australia ’ s Wet Tropics World Heritage Area .
Kuranda Scenic Railway : Temporarily closed .

PALM COVE
Palm Cove was described as ‘ a bit messy ’ after the cyclone , with some flood damage to the shoreline and a few eateries . But restaurants and cafes reopened quickly and it ’ s back to being a tropical paradise .

Walk along the palm-lined Esplanade , fish off the jetty and enjoy a long lunch at Nu Nu Restaurant and dinner at The Reef House .
