FREEDOM CAMP OF THE MONTH
No doubt about it : Hay is a top New South Wales location . The first time we visited was with the four kids and we learned all about the local prisoners of war at the Dunera Museum .
What an eye opener for them ! But the town has several excellent museums , and at the time there was a visiting dinosaur exhibit , too !
More recently , we ‘ empty nesters ’ camped the night on the majestic Murrumbidgee River . And that sunset was superb . This petfriendly free-camp is also behind some special water tower art , a touching tribute to servicemen and women .
Other travellers who have visited this site have told us , via our Camps Australia Wide app , that they love this site because it provides very clean , flushable toilets , plenty of room , incredible rivergum trees and birdlife , and that it is suitable for big rigs .
We agree ! The large bushcamping area has excellent amenities . No wonder it is popular . With so many people using this site , I was dreading using the facilities , but I was impressed by how clean they had been kept . Even though we arrived late , we still found a private spot to chill beside the campfire . We highly recommend it !
Best of all , Sandy Point Reserve is only one of many freedom camping options in Hay . The showground caretaker also shared his faves for local meals ! Tip : Sandy Point Reserve can get muddy – check out the other sites if there is wet weather .
