I was riding my motorcycle along Victoria ’ s frustrating Monash Freeway earlier this month when I approached a caravanner from behind . Rather than immediately overtake , I sat behind the van for a kilometre or two . You see , this caravanner was doing less than 70km / h on a 100km / h freeway , and I had to wonder : was this a safe driving / towing practice ?

As a never-ending stream of traffic pulled into the overtaking lane , it occurred to me that this driver was towing so slowly for one of two reasons : he either lacked confidence in his equipment , or in his own abilities to a tow a caravan . Whichever it was , the result was motorists swerving at speed around his vehicle .

There will always be times when caravanners need to slow right down , especially in adverse weather , but this wasn ’ t one of them . Not everyone will agree , but to me a safe caravan and tow vehicle combination is one that can confidently keep up with the flow of traffic , not one that needs to be babied along well under the speed limit . A safe driver is one who has justified confidence in his or her equipment and understands its limitations . If either of these two factors is missing , it ’ s time to rethink things .
