LETTERS FROM THE ROAD

OUTSOURCING TO AI
I read the article about the trailer reversing aid now available on the Ford Ranger and Everest ( GoRV # 86 ). You asked the question if it would be better to learn to reverse a caravan properly yourself first before relying on artificial intelligence to do it for you . I could not agree more . Don ’ t get me wrong : this kind of technology can be great , but it ’ s a bit like learning to type before writing by hand . What happens if the technology you ’ re relying on fails to work and you don ’ t have the fundamental skills to do the job yourself ? Far better to master how to back-up a trailer first and use the technology as a convenience .

A GREAT IDEA !
Ford ’ s reversing assist sounds like a great idea . I certainly would like to have a helper on my vehicle . I ' m not the best caravan backer . In a straight line with a little space it is okay , but turns are no good . I might need to buy a Ford . Thanks for your article – very interesting .

OUR TIME HAS COME !
My husband and I have just bought ourselves a new-to-us Goldstream pop-top and we are planning our lap of the map , starting in Victoria , heading up to Queensland and across to Broome . We haven ’ t worked out the entire route yet but , as we are discovering , the planning is actually half the fun . We have been staying up late , drinking wine and talking about the possibilities and directions we might take , how we ’ ll overcome emergencies – all the stuff you read about , think will never happen to you , but will be glad you planned for if it ever does .
After a life-time grinding away in offices , our freedom to hit the road as we please , and go wherever we please , is close .
