HAVE FAITH IN YOUR EQUIPMENT
If you ’ ve done your research , and you ’ re confident that everything is compliant and safe , there ’ s no reason to splutter along at 60km / h in a 90km / h zone . Frankly , if you aren ’ t confident in your equipment , haven ’ t done your research , or feel uncertain about anything , you shouldn ’ t be on the road towing a big ol ’ caravan anyway . People die that way .
Having said that , there ’ s a difference between inexperience and carelessness . The key is to know the difference . I wouldn ’ t fault a new caravanner for making a mistake – we all have to start somewhere – but if that mistake is the result of recklessness , well , it ’ s a different story . And that story may involve the police … or the coroner ’ s court .
So if I don ’ t have faith in the equipment , from the caravan to the tow vehicle to the hitch pin connecting the two , I would not tow the caravan . For me , the very act of towing a caravan is confirmation that I have done my checks and have confidence . Now , that ’ s not a guarantee that nothing will go wrong , but it ’ s a good start .
