THE NEED FOR SPEED ?
Is there a need for speed when towing a caravan ? No . There is , however , a need to drive in a safe and legal fashion , and more often than not , that means keeping up with the traffic . Sure , we all probably knock a few kays per hour off our speed , especially in less than ideal conditions , and that ’ s fine . But what we shouldn ’ t do is drive so far below the speed limit that it creates an obstruction .
If you don ' t feel confident driving at what would be objectively considered a safe , legal speed for the conditions , you should ask yourself why . If it ’ s a personal fear , based on your own subjective worries about side-sway , etc ., then you might benefit from a towing course .
My rule of thumb when it comes to speed is , well , I don ’ t have one . Instead , I note the speed limit , as well as the road , weather and traffic conditions , along with how the caravan appears to be responding to those conditions , and adjust my speed accordingly . But in my opinion , setting towing speed according to subjective fear or concern will only lead to bad habits or worse . Far better , I believe , to build up a bank of towing experience on a foundation of knowledge , rather than diving into the deep end and hoping for the best .
