TRAVELS WITH KINGDEANO ADVENTURES
As a kid , I had so many friends who would come back from school holidays asking me , “ Have you been to Ettamogah Pub , which has crooked walls with a truck on the roof ?”
I would always reply “ no ”, but I thought to myself that one day when I ’ m old enough I ’ ll take myself there . So , many years later , when I heard you could camp out at the back of the pub for the price of a meal , it was on my bucket list !
Recently , we ventured on a New South Wales road trip , with Ettamogah Pub being our first place to park . The pub is located just across the Victorian / NSW border , a few minutes from Albury-Wodonga .
The original creator of the Ettamogah Pub was illustrator Ken Maynard , who started drawing the pub in 1959 . The pub was made famous through his regular cartoons in The Australasian Post . Following the cartoons , the pub was built by businessman Lindsay Cooper and opened in 1987 . Mr Cooper wanted to create the themed family restaurant based on the cartoon , with its sloping walls , which would become a tourist icon – and still is today .
Upon arriving at the pub , we took prime spot to get a family photo of us with our campervan in front of the iconic pub . We then drove to the side of the carpark , to where we set-up camp for the night , which was a large oval with plenty of space and green grass for Twyla to run around . We did notice that the pub has a tiny home for bookings .
We took a stroll around the area to see what was around . There was a large undercover bar area that featured an upside-down plane hanging off the ceiling , a shower block ( paid ) for visitors , and a cockatoo enclosure , just to name a few . On our walk , we discovered that the pub was closed and later learned that it ’ s open for viewing by staff and volunteers at various times of the day .
