Winter once again . Of course , if you ’ re in the fortunate position of being able to head north , or already live in the tropics or sub-tropics , you probably rather like this time of year . But if you ’ re in the south , camping takes a little extra resolve .

Nothing beats a roaring campfire in winter . I ’ m not wild about using the bathroom during the night , and nor do I particularly enjoy climbing out of bed first thing on a frosty winter ’ s morning when camping , but I do like to get out there once or twice during these colder months – the scenery always looks and feels different , and it ’ s typically quieter .

In this issue , Marty Ledwich concludes his detailed two-part series on free-camping . As he points out , successful free-camping requires preparation . Regardless of the season , whether it ’ s summer or winter , there ’ s no reason not to camp – as long as you ’ re prepared . Camping unprepared in winter is a joyless experience and I highly recommend you don ’ t do that . But if you ’ ve got what you need to beat the cold , it can be surprisingly rewarding .
