REPAIRS AND REFUNDS

The issue of caravan warranty popped up in the media recently , with a person being awarded a full refund of her caravan purchase price by the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal .
According to reports , the caravan had 12 defects – each one relatively minor and fixable . On that basis , the manufacturer had refused a refund , instead offering repairs . However , QCAT said that taken together , the 12 defects constituted a major failure , therefore warranting a full refund . The defects included warped cupboard doors , a raised screw damaging the vinyl floor , hanging wiring , and a toilet roll holder that kept falling off .
If I paid $ 90,000 for a caravan that had a laundry list of defects , as this customer had , I ’ d want a full refund , rather than repairs , too . All those defects would not instil the van ’ s new owner with much confidence . If the manufacturer couldn ’ t even get the toilet roll holder right , I would have zero faith that the van would hang together when it mattered .
Buying a new caravan should be an exciting , rewarding experience , and thankfully that is far and away the case for most people . Now that she has been awarded a full refund , I hope that this Queensland customer finds a company that can build her the van of her dreams .
