FIVE EAST-COAST CAMPSITES THAT WON’T COST YOU A DIME.

CLEM WALTON PARK, QLD
Travelling in summer doesn’t
need to be a crowded and
expensive experience, so
before you put your name
and money in the queue
for that scarce spot by the
coast, here are five great
free camps to consider…

Perhaps, oddly, my favourite
summer free-camp is nowhere
near the sea. In fact, it is in the
heart of Western Queensland’s
mining belt, Cloncurry.
Turn off the Barkley
Highway, 67km east of Mt Isa,
open a gate, then drive less
than 2km on a well-maintained
unsealed road that’s easily
navigable by on-road caravans
and you’re on the banks of
the tranquil Corella River, just
below the adjacent dam.
There you’ll find a wide range
of lakeside and higher-ground
bush camping areas with one
great thing in common: they
are all free and there’s no
maximum-stay period.
