You and your family are inside your caravan . Suddenly … it starts to move . Shocked , your heart pounding , you realise someone is attempting to tow it away with you all still inside .

That ’ s what happened to a family – two adults and three children – earlier this month . At 9.10pm , they heard their car start and felt their van begin to move . The reports didn ’ t say but I can only assume they ’ d left their car hitched up ( it may have been a drivethrough site ). This incident occurred at a caravan park west of Townsville .

Fortunately , the family was able to exit the caravan safely . Apparently , the van ’ s keys had been stolen earlier that same afternoon . I ’ m speculating , but the theft and endangerment of the family does not seem random .

It reminds me of a story we published of a family whose van was invaded while they slept inside ( GoRV # 19 ). They lost about $ 9000 in property , and didn ’ t even realise they had been robbed until they woke up in the morning .

Let this , therefore , act as a warning . You ’ re caravan is not necessarily as secure as you think it is , and in a coming issue , we ’ ll have an article on what you can do to improve your security .
