TRAVELS WITH KINGDEANO ADVENTURES
We have been lucky to have visited Cairns before , but we had our own vehicle to travel in this time . And with that , we thought we ’ d spend a day exploring the region .
We hit the road heading south , first driving past Mount Bartle Frere . The mountain proudly holds the title of Queensland ’ s highest mountain , reaching an elevation of 1622m . As we drove down the Bruce Highway , the mountain range was surrounded by fog and clouds . On either side of the highway were ongoing fields full of sugarcane and , occasionally , a banana plantation .
Our first stop for the day was a little town called Babinda . Each year , the town is often named Australia ' s wettest town , with an average annual rainfall of over 4m . We had heard that Babinda had a reputable bakery but unfortunately , it was closed on our day of visit , so we enjoyed brunch at a cafe . The town has a few cafes and a pub .
After our meal , we made our way to the Babinda Boulders . The shallows of the river are a popular swimming spot , and the grounds have a few picnic spots for locals and tourists . We took our time walking the asphalt track , meandering through the rainforest to take advantage of the spectacular views of the boulders and the river below . The boulders have a tragic history of drownings – people are not aware of how dangerous the strong currents of water can be . As we had to keep moving , we took some photos to remember our visit and returned to our campervan .
