There’ s been a tightening of the market in recent times. 2025 is shaping up to be a tough one for the Australian RV industry and travel in general. Gerry Ryan, the man who founded Jayco, predicted it a couple months ago, and he was right.

Is this why the Tidal River camping area in Wilson’ s Prom, Vic, was deserted over Easter? It should have been loaded with holidaymakers. Last year, the Victorian government introduced a well-meaning scheme in which access to state-managed campgrounds such as Tidal River would be free of charge for a seven-month period, with no penalty for not showing up to your booked site.

Trouble is, businesses around Tidal River and many more just like it, rely on tourism, and Easter is usually a peak time for them. Alas, it seemed most people who’ d booked for Tidal River simply didn’ t show up this year, leaving plenty of people who’ d have loved to stay there and support local businesses fuming. After all, the no-shows had not paid in advance and would receive no penalty for not showing up.
