Late last year , we gathered six offroad caravans , as well as four offroad hybrid campers , on a property in Nar Nar Goon , Vic , to put them through their paces as part of our 7Mate TV show . Over the course of four or five days , we towed these vans around a pre-determined circuit before crawling underneath each van to check out their underpinnings , and of course checking out their interiors .

The event , which we dubbed the Offroad Challenge , was held at the tail end of major flooding in Victoria . The water table was chockers and it sometimes felt that the very act of walking on the grass paddocks would result in someone sinking knee-deep . But , armed with traction boards and at least one 4WD with a winch , we forged ahead .

But what is ‘ offroad ’ caravanning , anyway ? We didn ’ t want to portray the ‘ cowboy ’ sense of the term . After all , very few people would treat their caravan as though they stole it . Instead , we aimed to find a balance – grassy undulations , open fields and dirt tracks were the order of the day .

We had a ball putting this event together for the telly , and we eventually decided to showcase these vans to you in this special digital edition . Who knows , you might even find your next van within these pages !
